 Frequently Asked Questions

What's an iPod comic?
A Clickwheel iPod comic is a set of images that a user downloads from the site, uploads to their iPod, and then views one at a time, scrolling through them using the iPod's interface. (Just like a photo gallery.)
How do I make one?
Sizing-
iPod comic files are 640 pixels wide x 480 pixels high. If you're creating content just for iPods all you have to do is work in this space, or if you're repurposing existing work in a different size simply drag, drop and scale panels to this space. We'll call this space a frame.
How many panels you place on a frame is up to you. Experiment with different numbers to see what works best for your comic. One panel per frame will result in a very steady cadence, great for comic strips, while several panels on one frame will keep the story fast paced. A mix of the two can offer pacing options that are unique to iPod comics and offer tons of storytelling potential. Try things like repeating a panel but zooming in more each time to really build drama, or several repeated frames to really drive home a timing based joke. Examples like this are only the tip of the iceberg. It's a whole new kind of comic and we're still finding new possibilities all the time.
Lettering-
"But those iPod screens are reeeeeealllllly small." We hear it all the time. They're also very, very sharp. You'd be surprised what you can get away with. Your best bet is to look at your finished frame and scale it to 50%. If you can still read the lettering on your monitor, it'll read great on an iPod. After a few frames you'll find what works. If all else fails, load the frames to your iPod and see for yourself. If you don't have an iPod, have no fear, just email us here and we'll be happy to check the work on our iPods and let you know.
If you're using white type on black, or other styled lettering take special care, it can be harder to read, so err on the side of caution when sizing your lettering.
