 Frequently Asked Questions

What's an Animatic?
An animatic is an iPod comic that is made into a movie using video editing software. Unlike an iPod comic, the user does not scroll through panels using the iPod's interface; the comic plays a frame at a time like a movie. You decide how long each frame stays on screen when you edit the movie. (Be sure to give your reader enough time to read all the text!) Animatics can be viewed on iPods and can be distributed via the iTunes music store.
Animatics are a very different type of comic, and one that Clickwheel has pioneered. It's a different kind of reading experience than a traditional comic but the unique qualities of our animatics have made them hugely popular. They are more work to create than iPod comics or PDFs, but they offer a lot to readers who love spending their free time watching videos online. (There's no shortage of that type these days!)
What movie file formats does Clickwheel accept?
Your movie needs to be in MV4 format. If your software does not allow this format, QuickTime Pro does.
Can my animatic feature music or voiceovers?
You bet. For music make sure you're using music that is public domain or you have the rights for though. Using protected music in your animatic is prohibited and Clickwheel will not be liable for any copyright infringement on your part.
How do I make an Animatic?
Step one is to create an iPod comic in the exact same way you would if you were not making it into an animatic. (In fact, why not upload the same episode as an iPod comic too?) For animatics, about 75 frames is the upper limit for length due to the large size of movie files.
Once you have your iPod comic completed to the correct specifications, you will need to use a piece of video editing software to make the frames into a movie file. Try using different transitions and zooms to make something that suits your work. You can achieve anything from simulating the experience of reading a comic book to widely experimental effects. Try viewing one or two of our pieces to see what we mean.
